He hopes to gain insights into the world of academia and learn about the intricacies of economic research and its processes, with the ultimate goal of conducting his own research in the future.
Luigi Vicencio

Luigi, a third-year Honours Economics student, hopes to foster his economics knowledge and gain experience in academia. He is interested in monetary theory and economics of education. In his free time, Luigi likes to watch football and discover new spots at UBC.
Ferdinand Rother

Ferdinand is a fourth-year Economics major in the Bachelor + Master of Management program. He has previously worked on the podcast team and is passionate about writing, reading, sailing, and hiking. This past summer, he gained experience working at the European Commission, where he developed a keen interest in energy economics, consulting, and macroeconomic issues. With an interdisciplinary interest in political economy, economic history, and development economics, Ferdinand is excited to contribute to IONA and explore the latest student research in economics.

He is particularly interested in applying theoretical frameworks to better understand market behaviour and strategic interactions between firms. Callum is a third-year honours economics student interested in the intersection of economics with law and public policy. Previously, he has worked as a Research Assistant for the Vancouver School of Economics, a Junior Analyst for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and a Research Professional for economic consulting firm Analysis Group. He is looking forward to reading the work of fellow students, and contributing to a great team.

Ariel is a third-year Bachelor of International Economics student pursuing a double specialization in statistics and mathematics. Having a pronounced interest in the interplay between energy prices, sovereign debt markets, and foreign exchange risk, he is particularly fascinated by the role played by misaligned expectations in perpetuating market inefficiencies. As part of the Journal, he hopes to share his passion for economics with other students seeking to broaden their personal and academic horizons and is looking forward to working to diffuse some of UBC’s most promising undergraduate research to a wider audience.

Gabrielle is a fourth-year economics and political science student with a deep interest in the intersection between economics and public policy. She is particularly drawn to discussions surrounding labour economics, political economy, and monetary policy. Ayush is a third-year Bachelor's degree in Arts student, with a major in Economics and a minor in Political Science, displays a keen enthusiasm for utilizing regression models to assess the effects of government policies on society through an economic lens. Beyond his academic commitments, Ayush is working part-time with a youth-focused non-profit organization and aspires to further advance his academic knowledge to contribute to IONA Journal. Ayush’s ultimate goal is to use empirical research methods in order to gain a deeper understanding of the economic consequences of our global environment and the influence of markets on the public sphere.
Rachel Wong

Rachel is interested in the social and environmental dimensions of food systems, and how they intersect with poverty and inequality in Southeast Asia. In the long term, she hopes to contribute to the fight against hunger, smallholder exploitation, and the loss of agrobiodiversity. You can find her on Instagram @escchelator, or writing longform on CongAnd.Co, a publication dedicated to bridging the dearth of online information on SEA agriculture. Outside of food, she finds joy in reading, learning dialects, and going for runs.

Having worked with IONA in his first-year, he looks forward to learning more about public policy and research methodologies employed in modern economic research through the new crop of papers for the tenth volume of the journal.

Valarmathi Vishnu is pursuing an undergraduate degree in International Relations and Economics. She is particularly interested in the application of development economics in community-based research and has gained research and fieldwork experience across three continents during her undergraduate studies. Sultana Razia

Sultana is a third-year Cognitive Systems student with a minor in Economics at UBC. She’s passionate about exploring how economics intersects with social impact, policy, and sustainability, especially in areas like gender equity. Her passion for debating complex issues led her to reach the quarterfinals at the International Public Policy Forum (IPPF) Debate 2021. She believes in advocating for rights and social issues and so she co-founded a non-profit “Put a Period”, at the age of 17, to eliminate stigma and raise awareness about menstrual health and SRHR. She is really into traveling, reading and playing Codenames with friends.

He currently works as a clean technology data analyst for the Canadian government and is particularly drawn to quantitative aspects of economics.
